Within the candlelit tranquility of Emmanuel's nave, immerse yourself in a meditative evening of reflection and beauty as Holy Week begins.
Critically acclaimed vocal sextet Ars Populi draws on a rich tapestry of musical traditions united by a common thread of prayer, guiding listeners through an evening of contemplation on suffering, penitence, and hope. At the heart of the program are the Tudor masters — Robert White's haunting Lamentations of Jeremiah, John Sheppard's Salvator Mundi, and William Byrd's Miserere — alongside the stark emotional directness of Claudio Monteverdi's Crucifixus and the luminous harmonies of Maurice Duruflé's Quatre Motets; ancient Gregorian chant and the rustic vigor of American shape-note hymns complete a program that spans centuries while speaking in a single voice.
Woven throughout are readings from the Offices of Tenebrae and the penitential Psalms — words that have carried generations through these days of darkness toward the promise of dawn.
