The Anti-Racism Project presents Black Musical Songfest and the Hidden History of the Banjo

After the 10:30am service next week, November 26, the Anti-Racism project will be joined by Kristina Gaddy and Justin Golden from The Rhapsody Project to to explore and celebrate music and heritage through an anti-racist lens.

Kristina is the author of Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo's Hidden History, a recent book about the banjo's forgotten and marginalized early, African American history and the way in which that history was manipulated for white supremacist purposes. Justin is a Richmond-based guitarist and songwriter, who was raised on the Virginia coast and is steeped in the distinctive, fingerpicked Piedmont blues of the central part of the state.

They will talk about Black music history in Maryland and Virginia, play some songs, and invite participants to begin their own Layers of Heritage work, based on a program at The Rhapsody Project. An exploration of your various layers of heritage can uncover an appreciation for the unique elements that make up each of us, and this information about yourself (and others) can inform how you interact with and respond to others. The Rhapsody Project believes that this kind of personal work can contribute to a kinder, more just society.
