Few Anglican traditions have endured as long — or as beautifully — as Choral Evensong, whose architecture of psalmody, canticles, and prayer has offered a daily rhythm of reflection at the close of day for more than five centuries.
A short organ recital opens this afternoon's program before giving way to that candlelit tradition, as The Emmanuel Choir sings Kenneth Leighton's celebrated Second Service alongside James MacMillan's Padre Pio's Prayer — a work of aching simplicity drawn from the words of the beloved Italian mystic, and a perfect embodiment of what Evensong invites: to still the noise of the world and rest in something larger than ourselves.
