Lagrime Mie

  • Emmanuel Episcopal Church 811 Cathedral St Baltimore, MD 21201 United States (map)

Grammy-nominated soprano Margaret Carpenter Haigh and Grammy-winning theorbist William Simms traverse the intertwined worlds of Elizabethan lute song and Italian recitative lament in this closing concert of the Tuesdays at Six season.

Heralded by The New York Times for performances that move audiences to tears, and praised for her "expressive power, exquisite diction, and a clear, flexible voice," Haigh brings rare interpretive depth to music she has made distinctly her own. She is joined by Simms, a Baltimore-based lutenist whose artistry needs no introduction to local audiences. Opening with three works by John Dowland, the program moves through the emotional expansiveness of Nicolas Lanier's Hero's Lament to Leander, the achingly personal Lagrime mie by Barbara Strozzi, and Luigi Rossi's Lamento di Zaida moro. Claudio Monteverdi's Voglio di vita uscir, a lament cast over a dancing ciaccona bass, closes the evening with an unexpected glimmer of light.
