The program pairs Johann Sebastian Bach's untroubled pastoral air Sheep May Safely Graze, in Egon Petri's beloved transcription, with Ludwig van Beethoven's bright and genial Sonata in F Major, Frédéric Chopin's Polonaise-Fantaisie — among his final and most searching works, hovering between dance and dream — and Sergei Prokofiev's colossal Sonata No. 8, last and deepest of the "War Sonatas," a work of brooding complexity and overwhelming pianistic power.
