Longtime friends and boundary-pushing recital duo Michael Manganiello and Stephanie Bairdpresent their newest program, Kol Ha'Isha, P'ni Ha'Olam ("Voice of the Woman, Face of the World").
Manganiello, a member of the Emmanuel Choir and an "exciting" bass-baritone with "powerful low notes" (OperaWire), joins the "sensational" Baird in a program that explores Judaism and feminism through song. At its heart is a dialogue between Helen Medwedeff Greenberg's Froyen Shtimme("Women's Voices") and Ruth Schonthal's Fragments from a Woman's Diary. A Baltimore native, Greenberg sets Yiddish poems by five women poets, illuminating femininity and Jewishness through harmony, honesty, and humour. Rounding out the program are works by Maryland-based composer Lori Laitman, contemporary Israeli composer Stella Lerner, and Carole King, Regina Spektor, and Sylvia Fine.
