A Golden Wire

  • Emmanuel Episcopal Church 811 Cathedral St Baltimore, MD 21201 United States (map)

When Plato described the creation of the universe in his Timæus, he revealed something remarkable: the proportions God used to order the planets are identical to the intervals of the musical scale. For Renaissance humanists, this was no coincidence — the heavens, the earth, the human body, and the human voice were all understood to be organized according to the same harmonic principles, music not as art but as the fabric of creation itself.

Celebrated for their ability to illuminate the ideas that animate great music, A Golden Wire — led by gambist Arnie Tanimoto and harpist Parker Ramsay — brings this vision to life through Elizabethan and Jacobean English music alongside Italian instrumental works. With viols and harps as their voices, the ensemble places Thomas Campion's Come let us sound with Melody at the heart of the program: a song that fuses Platonic and Christian visions of a universe singing in perfect accord.
