Schubert: The Last Song

  • Emmanuel Episcopal Church 811 Cathedral St Baltimore, MD 21201 United States (map)

Composed only months before his death, Franz Schubert’s late works — including the Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960, and selections from Schwanengesang, D. 957, his final song cycle — carry a profound introspection and an unmistakably personal voice. In them, he distills longing, tenderness, and the candid interplay between darkness and light with a quiet, visionary clarity. As his life drew toward its close, Schubert’s writing grew ever more infused with hope, affection, and a heightened sense of human presence, expressed not overtly but through the subtle radiance and emotional depth.

This program features pianist David Fung, acclaimed for his interpretations of Schubert, Mozart, and Bach, together with renowned countertenor Daniel Moody, whose artistry brings vivid immediacy to these late songs. These works continue to resonate for their rare ability to speak to the essence of our shared human journey.
