First Sunday Forum: Brown Memorial Tutoring Program

  • Emmanuel Episcopal Church 811 Cathedral Street Baltimore, MD, 21201 United States (map)

Over the past 50 years, the Brown Memorial Tutoring Program has played a vital role for many children in Baltimore who have struggled in school. The students who are referred for tutoring have fallen behind in grade level reading, based on school assessments. At the beginning of the school year, each student is paired with a tutor who provides one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing and other skills. Many members of Emmanuel have shared their talents as tutors with this program.

To share more about this successful program, First Sunday Forum will host three inspiring participants in the Brown Memorial Tutoring program, Sunday, December 4, from 9:10 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Martha Socolar

Martha Socolar, Director of the Brown Memorial Tutoring Program, has been actively involved with the program for about 18 years. Initially a volunteer tutor, she was the program’s assistant director and in 2008, became the director. Martha has a graduate degree in elementary education. She is an experienced program administrator, juggling multiple tasks that include student assessments, volunteer tutor training and maintaining good communication and strong relationships with partnering schools and program supporters.

Jigger has participated on a myriad of Emmanuel committees, groups, and clubs. Six years ago, she led the initiative for Emmanuel to sponsor a large Syrian refugee family who are now US citizens.

Fatima Jibril

Fatima Jibril is a Baltimore native. She attended Brown Memorial when she was in the 2nd grade at Eutaw Marshburn Elementary School.
